چکیده

Reasoners resist even the valid inferences, such as If Lisa met her friend then she went to a play, Lisa met her friend, therefore she went to a play, when they are given an additional condition, e.g., If Lisa had enough money then she went to a play. Four experiments test alternative accounts of this suppression effect. The first experiment shows that inferences are suppressed even when reasoners produce their own conclusions, based on the first or second conditional. The second experiment shows that suppression occurs even when the premises are expanded to rule out the converse. The third experiment shows that inferences are suppressed more when the background conditions are expressed in a biconditional. The fourth experiment shows that both valid and fallacious inferences can be suppressed when the premises refer to alternatives as well as to additional conditions. We suggest that suppression rests on the availability of counterexamples. © 1999 Academic Press

COUNTEREXAMPLES IN CHAOTIC GENERALIZED SHIFTS

‎In the following text for arbitrary $X$ with at least two elements‎, ‎nonempty countable set $Gamma$‎ ‎we make a comparative study on the collection of generalized shift dynamical systems like $(X^Gamma,sigma_varphi)$ where $varphi:GammatoGamma$ is an arbitrary self-map‎. ‎We pay attention to sub-systems and combinations of generalized shifts with counterexamples regarding Devaney‎, ‎exact Dev...

Issues in Reasoning about Iffy propositions: Deductive Rationality in Validating and Testing Conditional Inferences

We asked people to validate conditional inferences. The results show, first, that people are more likely to look for a falsification versus confirmation. Second, falsification rates are lower for logically valid versus invalid inferences. Deductively valid inferences are inferences that follow necessarily. Our Experiment (N = 96) shows that emphasising this logicality constraint increases falsi...

Some statistical inferences on the upper record of Lomax distribution

In this paper, we investigate some inferential properties of the upper record Lomax distribution. Also, we will estimate the upper record of the Lomax distribution parameters using methods, Moment (MME), Maximum Likelihood (MLE), Kullback-Leibler Divergence of the Survival function (DLS) and Baysian. Finally, we will compare these methods using the Monte Carlo simulation.

The Effect of Self-Regulation on Improving EFL Readers’ Ability to Make Within-Text Inferences

Self-regulation is the ability to regulate one’s cognition, behavior, actions, and motivation strategically and autonomously in order to achieve self-set goals including the learning of academic skills and knowledge. Accordingly, self-regulated learning involves self-generated and systematic thoughts and behaviors with the aim of attaining learning goals. With that in mind, this study aimed to ...

When Are Inferences from Multiple Imputation Valid?

Multiple imputation, as described by Rubin, has seen a wide variety of applications. Counterexamples, presented by Fay (1991), and new methods, such as those of J.N.K. Rao and J. Shao, that can asymptotically disagree with the multiple imputation approach, have raised questions about the validity of multiple imputation. This paper identifies critical restrictions on the practical application of...
